Sailormars is the passionate and fiery soldier of war. Her attacks with flame are probably the most powerful of the four inner senshi. But she also has a very strong power outside of her senshi form. Rei is a psychic who can feel impending evil. She can often foresee an attack, giving the team enough time to transform and prepare for battle.

Rei has an extra power which involves a small piece of paper with Japanese symbols written on it called an Ofunda. She yells "Akuruyo taisan!" (which translates to "Evil Spirit, Begone!") and throws it at her enemy. This paralyzes her opponent and can even drive out the evil entity in some cases. She is also a miko (Shinto priestess) in training at the Hikawa Jinja (Fire River Shrine) on Sendai Hill. This, not the ability to transform into Sailormars, is the origin of her "Ofunda attack." As a miko, she also reads the fires, evidence she was attuned with fire even before she was Sailormars. Appropriately enough, her name even means "Spirit of Fire"

Her mother is dead and her father is a politician who is often away on business. She meets with her father once a year on her birthday; they do not have a good relationship. She was raised at the temple by her maternal grandfather. At the temple she has two crows, Phobos and Deimos, named for the moons of Mars. Incidentally, as the Princess of the planet Mars her Castle is named for them as well, the Phobos Deimos Castle. In the manga the crows take human form and it is revealed that they are from a planet called Coronis. Unlike the other senshi, she attends T*A Private Girls School, probably due to her father's position. She is greatly admired by the other students, so much that they treat her like a queen.

Unlike the other senshi, she is not at all interested in romance. In fact, she hates men. She believes that they are all like her father, uncaring people that ignore their families. Unfortunate considering that there are usually throngs of men around her, all enchanted by her beauty. Once she did give in to love. Kaidou-san was her father's assistant and hoped to be his succesor. They were very close when Rei was younger and she came to care for him. She was devastated when she learned he was engaged to be married.

Rei's personality is a good match to her abilities. She is a sophisticated young lady, but she can also be a real spitfire. Usagi and Rei still argue in the manga, but it is not nearly as volatile as it appears in the anime. She is portrayed as beautiful and mystical, somehow on a different level than the other senshi.

Sailormars is a dynamic character who I can't help but admire. Dealing with a psychic gift can be difficult and a bit scary, she certainly handles it well. She adds a touch of the exotic to the story. I can't imagine Sailormoon without her!
